Stephen Covey, native of Salt Lake City, Utah, was born on October 24, 1932. His famous bestselling book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, caused him to appear on the nation’s radar screens. He has also written First Things First as well as Principle-Centered Leadership. Not only has he made significant contributions to the literary world but he is also founder of Covey Leadership and is a partner of Franklin-Covey Corporation, a company that plans and organizes.

His renowned book was first published in 1990 and has sold over 15 million copies. In his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, he discusses the breakdown of a common self-help method known as “The Personality Ethic” and replaces it with his own philosophy, “The Character Ethic.” This frame of belief is centered on each individuals ability to control their conduct and principles. The seven habits include being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, thinking to win, seek understanding then to be understood, communicating creatively and renewing your self.

Follow-up titles to The Seven Habits are meant to both add to the original and form a cohesive philosophy on personal, principle-based leadership. Being a highly effective person himself, Covey’s purpose in writing is to assist others and empower them to cultivate this same type of effctiveness in their own lives. This is most often directed to business and management spheres with economic gain as the end goal but he also values family and personal leadership.

Covey’s greatest challenge is to fight the “get effective fast” mentality with the reality that cultivating day to day character will ultimately produce lasting effectiveness in all parts of life. His contributions range from helping CEOs and leading businessmen to homemakers. The only argument against his philosophy is that in today’s age unfortunately character is not always the most important quality.
